Aeration
Lawn Aeration in Boise & the Treasure Valley
Compacted soil is why your lawn won't bounce back.
Most struggling lawns in the Valley aren't a watering problem. They're a soil problem. Years of mowing, kids, dogs, and clay press the soil flat until roots have nowhere to go. Aeration pulls plugs out of the ground so air, water, and fertilizer can reach the root zone again.
What core aeration actually does
Per the University of Idaho Extension's turf guidance, core aeration removes small soil cores so roots can breathe and feed. Solid-tine 'spike' aeration looks the same but compacts soil further. We core-aerate, not spike.
Signs your lawn needs aeration
- ✓Water beads or runs off instead of soaking in
- ✓Heavy foot traffic from kids, pets, or shortcuts
- ✓Distinct soil layers from past topdressing or sod
- ✓New construction yard with compacted fill
- ✓Thin, brown patches that won't recover with watering
When we aerate
Cool-season grasses (most Treasure Valley lawns) respond best to aeration in early spring or early fall, when the grass is actively growing and can fill in the holes. We pair aeration with overseeding when it makes sense.
